Robinson StudeNTs:
Volunteer With Rooted in Play
Thanks for wanting to help! Our pop-ups are free, child-led play events where kids decide what to do with loose parts like tires, crates, gutters, sheets and much more. There's no instruction sheet and no "right" thing to build. Volunteers make it possible.
What to expect
Before the event: Plan to arrive at the time listed so we can go over the plan for the day and what each person is helping with.
During the event: You'll help move loose parts into the play space and set things up, then be a friendly, helpful presence while kids play. You don't have to run an activity or entertain anyone. When a kid asks "What am I supposed to make?", you can answer, "What do you think it could be?" We also have tape, scissors, and rope on hand, and kids love using them to attach, tie, and connect their ideas. If a kid asks you to hold something, cut a piece of tape, or help tie a knot, jump in. Then let them take it from there. You'll also keep an eye out for safety and let the playworkers know if something needs attention.
Finishing up the event: We all pitch in on clean-up. That means moving everything back, picking up the space, and loading up.
What we expect
Be kind and polite. Our events are full of young kids and their parents. That means friendly, family-friendly language.
Let the kids lead. Resist the urge to fix, direct, or take over their builds. Their ideas are the point.
Be present. Keep your phone in your pocket so you can notice what's going on around you.
Be reliable. Show up on time, and if something comes up, let us know as early as you can.
Speak up. If something looks unsafe, or you aren't sure what to do, check in with a playworker.
Dress for play. Wear clothes that can get dirty, and bring water.
Respect families' privacy. Please don't photograph or post kids.
